TECHNICAL ARCHITECT – (15+ years)

Abel Design Group is seeking Technical Architect to join our Houston office.  The ideal candidate will lead technical execution across all architecture and hospitality projects, with responsibility for documentation quality, coordination, code compliance, and constructability. Establishes and enforces firm standards, oversees QA/QC, and ensures consistent delivery of complete, buildable construction documents. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and enforce firm-wide documentation and detailing standards.
  • Lead QA/QC reviews key project milestones; ensure permit-ready, coordinated drawing sets.
  • Direct code analysis, occupancy classification, and life safety planning.
  • Oversee permitting strategy and coordinate with authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Ensure accessibility compliance across all projects.
  • Maintain technical oversight from schematic design through construction.
  • Coordinate with consultants to align architectural and engineering systems.
  • Review and resolve RFIs, submittals, and field issues during Construction Administration.
  • Serve as Architect of Record where required.
  • Identify technical risks early and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Minimize change orders, coordination conflicts, and field rework.
  • Support project teams in making timely, technically sound decisions.
  • Mentor staff in documentation, detailing, and systems integration.
  • Enforce adherence to firm standards across all teams.
  • Lead internal training on technical delivery and lessons learned.
  • Drive consistent delivery of coordinated, high-quality construction documents.
  • Improve project outcomes by reducing RFIs, change orders, and field conflicts.

Technical Proficiencies:

  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit for production, model management, and documentation standards.
  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD for legacy systems, consultant coordination, and detail development.
  • Advanced use of Bluebeam Revu for QA/QC workflows, document review, and construction administration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for tracking QA/QC, project data, and coordination logs.
  • Ability to establish and enforce BIM and documentation workflows across project teams.
  • Experience integrating consultant models and managing multi-disciplinary coordination.
  • Strong command of digital QA/QC processes, including redlining, version control, and issue tracking.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Architect.
  • 15+ years of experience in commercial and hospitality projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership in construction documentation and QA/QC.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, detailing, and constructability.
  • Proven experience with permitting and regulatory coordination.
  • Ground-up and complex renovation experience preferred.
  • Experience developing firm-wide standards or BIM protocols preferred.
  • Extensive construction administration experience preferred.
  • Strong technical leadership, coordination, and team development capabilities.
